This is the first student interview article that DGM Current has published, but we will continue the student interviews in the future. For this student interview, I chose to interview Tamsin, a 6th grader in Classroom 12. Tamsin is 11 years old right now and this is her first year at Desert Garden. She is a violinist and plays soccer on a team. In the summer, she enjoys swimming. She plays soccer on the AYSO team. She participates in tryouts to make her team and for her tournaments, her team has to travel around Arizona. She prefers to play the positions right center mid or center mid.

Tamsin has been playing the violin for four and a half years. Right now she is learning to play Two Grenadiers, a French ballad. It has been the hardest song she learned, but it is also her favorite. She enjoys soccer, violin, playing with little kids, fashion, making clay figures, interviews, eating, traveling, and talking to interesting people. Her favorite food is burgers, favorite color is light turquoise, and favorite animal is a dog.
DGM Current: How did you end up at DGM and why did you chose to come here?
Tamsin: My school had too many tests on the computer where they would just make first graders sit down and take 3 hour tests. You know the scantron that we take here? We used to take 6 scantron every semester.
DGM Current: What is your overall experience of DGM so far?

Tamsin: I Really like it here. People are really nice and loving and kind. I will probably stay here for middle school.
DGM Current: What was your first impression of DGM and how has it changed since then?
Tamsin: Everyone was really nice and perfect all the time. Now I know it is not completely perfect but I like it better this way.
DGM Current: What has been different with DGM that has made it better than with your previous school?
Tamsin: It is more of a community. At my old school we had desks but here it is more relaxed. It is easier to make friends here. At my old school everyone was shut in their little cliques and you had the same friends, but here it’s not like that. People are more open.
DGM Current: What is your favorite memory from Desert Garden so far?
Tamsin: When I got to see Classroom 12 for the first time. I loved the setup.
DGM Current: What are you most looking forward to in Middle Years and why?
Tamsin: Being with the older kids. I also really like the teachers.
DGM Current: You are one of the elders of the classroom. Do you think that has impacted your role as a leader and why or why not?
Tamsin: No. I’ve been a leader my whole life. I am good with kids. So… It’s always been this way.
DGM Current: What would you consider your strengths?

Tamsin: Leadership, kindness, strength, soccer, violin, and that I am not a picky eater.
I was so glad to be able to conduct the student interview and shoot some nice photos. I look forward to writing this article again in the future. Right now, I would like to acknowledge Tamsin for participating in the first student interview. It was extremely open minded and reflective and showed a thinker, communicator, and a risk taker.
